Cole Palmer, Wesley Fofana, Roméo Lavia spared from UEFA Conference League group stage
Chelsea have submitted our squad registration for the group stage league phase of the UEFA Conference League, wherein we’re scheduled to play six games to determine if and in what position we might advance to the knockout phase that starts in the new year.
Given that we will be heavily favored against all six our opponents (three home, three away games), and given that we have an overabundance of players looking for minutes, we have decided to not burden Cole Palmer, Wesley Fofana, and Roméo Lavia with these six games in the first-half of the season. In the cases of Lavia and Fofana, this decision was also undoubtedly influenced by their recent fitness issues — having combined for a grand total of one appearance last season — though Palmer is currently also rehabbing some unspecified ongoing concern after withdrawing from the England squad.
Chelsea will not call up Wesley Fofana, Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia to their Conference League squad for the league phase. Of course, there are UEFA limits but the decision was made on load management as Chelsea will compete in five competitions potentially until July 2025. — Nizaar Kinsella (@NizaarKinsella) September 5, 2024
While their absence, and our sudden lack of club-trained players in the first-team squad does leave us two short of the maximum number (25) of players on List A (17 is the maximum number of non-homegrown players allowed while 4 is the maximum number of association-trained players allowed), we do have plenty of candidates to fill out the squad from List B (i.e. under-21), which can always be changed per game, too — and we get to include Levi Colwill in that category still as well.
So, our squad for the six games in the UEFA Conference League “league phase” is:
non-HG (15): Badiashile, Caicedo, Casadei, Cucurella, Disasi, Enzo, Félix, Guiu, Gusto, Jackson, Jörgensen, Madueke, Mudryk, Neto, Nkunku, Sancho, Veiga
association-trained (4): Chukwuemeka, Dewsbury-Hall, Sánchez, Tosin
club-trained (2): Bergström, James
List B (6+): Acheampong, Colwill, Dyer, George, McMahon, Merrick
Or if you’re a visual learner: (The Premier League doesn’t differentiate between association-trained and club-trained, counting them all as “homegrown”, so both Palmer and Lavia can be easily registered. Fofana will have to take a place of a non-homegrown player: guessing Casadei?)
