UD Almería - Atlético de Madrid: A test at Power Horse Stadium

Atlético Madrid (16-3-6, 51 points) are coming off a 1-0 loss to Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg — and Diego Simeone was forced to substitute Griezmann and José María Giménez in the second half due to injury. Giménez is set for a three-week absence after suffering a recurrence of his chronic hamstring injury, while Griezmann is in a race against time to recover from an ankle twist before Thursday’s Copa del Rey semifinal second leg against Athletic Club.
“We’re not going to force the issue with Griezmann’s health,” Simeone told reporters on Friday. “We’re not going to force any player. He will return when he feels right.”
Simeone might have rested Griezmann anyway against Almería (0-8-17, 8 points). No team in LALIGA history has waited this long into a season to record its first win, and the competition’s bottom side is on pace to break Sporting Gijón’s 26-year-old record for the fewest points in a league season (13).
“Almería have competed very well in the last few games,” Simeone said. “They are in the situation they are in, but you can see the pride they have and they have left a good image in last few games.” Simeone will be making more changes to his lineup before Thursday’s visit to San Mamés — where Atleti will try to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg. El Cholo could hand starts to Gabriel Paulista and Reinildo Mandava in defense, with Stefan Savić completing the central trio. The coach is deciding between Rodrigo de Paul and Arthur Vermeeren in midfield, while Ángel Correa and Memphis Depay are likely to start as the forward pair.

Atlético are seeking just its second win all-time at Power Horse Stadium. Los Rojiblancos’ last loss to Almería came over 10 years ago, when two late goals from midfielder Verza guided the Andalusian side to a 2-0 victory over the eventual champions. Former captain and club icon Gabi had to finish that game in goal following an 84th-minute red card to goalkeeper Dani Aranzubia.
