Borussia Dortmund - Atlético Madrid: A semifinal place goes through Germany

The venue shifts to Germany and Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park, where Atlético Madrid have won once from three previous visits. Atlético, hoping to protect if not augment a 2-1 advantage from the first leg last week, are 90 minutes from qualifying for its first Champions League semifinal in seven seasons — and three of Los Rojiblancos’ four previous away results in this season’s competition would be good enough to finish the job.
“We’re facing a team that is very strong at home, and they will start the game at a very high tempo,” head coach Diego Simeone told reporters on Monday. “Our team is confident and responding very well to these important games.”

Diego Simeone: “Dortmund’s dangers? All are very good. The young one, number 43, I don’t want to get the name wrong (Jamie Bynoe-Gittens), but he was outstanding.” pic.twitter.com/isfh26bbS9 — Atletico Universe (@atletiuniverse) April 15, 2024

Atlético and Dortmund both enter this match after hard-fought wins over the weekend. Ten-man BVB held on to defeat Borussia Mönchengladbach away from home, but striker Sebastien Haller was injured during the 2-1 win and will not play Tuesday night. Atleti rallied from a goal down to top Girona at the Cívitas Metropolitano, the 3-1 victory affording Los Colchoneros a little breathing room in LALIGA’s top-four race.
“Things are going well at the club, we have all grown with the important results we’ve secured in the league,” Simeone said. “We have to play, not think so much. Tomorrow is going to be one of those good nights in the Champions League.” In order to produce another memorable night in Europe, Atlético will have to deal with Dortmund’s imposing “Yellow Wall,” the south stand at Signal Iduna Park (known as “BVB Stadion Dortmund” during UEFA competition). That terrace accommodates nearly 25,000 spectators, and Axel Witsel — the only player in this tie that has played for both clubs — knows the kind of cauldron that awaits Atleti on Tuesday night.
“It’s similar to our stadium, the atmosphere is remarkable, just like our home,” Witsel said during Monday’s joint presser. “We know that it will not be an easy game.”
El Cholo revealed that two of César Azpilicueta, Mario Hermoso, and Rodrigo Riquelme will start in Dortmund — with Azpilicueta, a player Simeone referred to as “special,” gaining momentum to start at left wing-back in place of the suspended Samuel Lino. Koke will anchor the midfield, flanked by Marcos Llorente and first-leg goalscorer Rodrigo de Paul. Up top, Antoine Griezmann and Álvaro Morata will enter this matchup having contributed to goals against Girona on Saturday. Date April 16, 2024
