Deportivo Alavés - Atlético de Madrid: Only 7 games left

Atlético Madrid (19-4-8, 61 points) saw its Champions League dream dashed again on Tuesday night, this time by Borussia Dortmund, meaning this 2023/24 season has only seven games remaining. Atlético, hoping to finish as one of the top four teams in LALIGA for the 12th season running, can go six points clear of fifth-place Athletic Club if Diego Simeone can guide his men to victory in Vitoria.
“When you give everything you’ve got, you have to be calm,” Simeone told reporters on Saturday. “Obviously, we made mistakes on Tuesday and there are things to improve, but now we have to focus on the games we have left in the league.” The season’s final meeting with Alavés (8-8-15, 32 points) gives Simeone one last chance to watch Samu Omorodion before the summer. Samu, who turns 20 years old in two weeks, has scored nine goals in 1,829 minutes this season between Granada and his loan spell at Alavés, demonstrating a tantalizing skillset amid discussion that he could replace Ángel Correa or Memphis Depay next season. Simeone did not address Samu’s future in Saturday’s press conference, with the latest speculation suggesting that the striker could be loaned out again in 2024/25.
“We know that Alavés will play with intensity,” Simeone said. “They play very well, and I can’t imagine any match other than this one.”
Álvaro Morata was dropped from Simeone’s squad on Saturday night due to illness, so Ángel Correa and Antoine Griezmann will be the starting forward pair at Mendizorrotza. Griezmann, Koke, Josema Giménez, and Nahuel Molina are all one yellow card away from suspension ahead of next weekend’s crucial clash with Athletic at the Cívitas Metropolitano. Simeone on Saturday expressed confidence in the struggling Molina, who suffered in defense on Tuesday night and has been out of form for several months.
“Molina is a very important player, there are things that he does well and there are other things he has to correct, like all players,” Simeone said. “He covers a lot of ground, he can arrive in the penalty area, he can cross the ball, he works hard, he scores goals...We love him a lot, and he is a hard worker.” Date April 21, 2024
