Real Madrid 3-2 Barcelona: Player Ratings
Following the defeat against PSG in the Champions League, Barcelona’s problems were far from over as they took on Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu for the second El Clasico of the season.
They did get off to a flying start, with Andreas Christensen scoring the first goal before Vinicius Jr converted from the spot to equalise after a controversial penalty call.
The drama did not end there, either, as a goal was chalked off due to insufficient goal-line angles, as Lamine Yamal scored from a corner.
The second half brought more drama as Fermin Lopez helped Barça take the lead before Vinicius Jr and Lucas Vazquez combined for the equaliser.
And as the game headed into injury time, it was time for Jude Bellingham to step up again, with his third goal in two league Clasicos this season.
This pretty much brings one of Barcelona’s most difficult seasons to a close as Madrid go 11 points clear on top of La Liga. Bang-average as usual, ter Stegen did not step up in a big game once again. His passing was average and a better goalkeeper diving the right way would have saved Vinicius’ penalty, as well. Had his moments in the game dealing with Vinicius, but mostly could not keep him contained. Lost his marker for the Bellingham goal, too. Did bits with his passing at times, and was in the right place at the right time with his aerial presence, but nothing spectacular. Gave away a penalty, but it was not his fault, at all. Spectacular as always with the buildup and did what he could defensively. Arguably his worst performance in a Barcelona shirt, Cancelo’s poor run of form continued today. Was more responsible than Cubarsi for the penalty on Vazquez, and if that was not enough, could not mark the Spaniard for the equaliser, either. Far from his influential best, Gundogan created a couple of decent chances, but playing deeper in the second half, he could not do much at all. Came through with the brilliant header for the opening goal but had to be substituted at half-time due to a knock. Almost gave away a goal, but made a brilliant recovery to deny Rodrygo. Had to be substituted before the break due to an ankle injury, but was very tame before it, as well, with Christensen doing most of his defensive work. Ran rings around Eduardo Camavinga, especially in the first-half, and had a goal unfairly taken away from him. Made several great runs behind the defence, as well. Lewandowski had less than three good first-touches in the game today, and was fairly hooked for Ferran Torres around the hour-mark. Put in a decent shift covering in midfield and attack on the left, and came away with the assist for Christensen’s goal, as well. Did not impact the game much at all despite having 45 minutes and can be blamed for Bellingham’s winner as he could not catch Brahim Diaz, who started the move. Came on at the break, and made a huge impact on the intensity of the midfield. Got on the score-sheet as well, with a well-taken rebound. Made a couple of great runs, including the one for Fermin’s goal. Had one decent chance fall to him, but was saved. Other than that, largely passive.
