Watch: Thomas Tuchel celebrates a third Champions League semifinals appearance, talks Bayern Munich’s second half adjustments vs. Arsenal

“Tough opponent, tough match.”
Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel was understated in his post-match comments after defeating Arsenal 1-0 on Wednesday, 3-2 on aggregate, to reach the third Champions League semifinals of his career.
But make no mistake, this was a serious achievement. The embattled 50-year-old, who is on his way out after season’s end, outfoxed one of the game’s top tacticians on the chess board and proved again that he is not so bad himself at coming up with solutions in a challenging tournament. Tuchel’s post-match interview, above, shed some light on how Bayern turned it around — especially in the second half after a first half that saw each team cagily probing the other’s weaknesses.
“More or less, we just explained what happened [in the first half],” Tuchel explained. “Where the spaces are, where it is difficult to accelerate, where we can maybe try a little bit better...especially in our left side, the triangle between Nous Mazraoui, Jamal Musiala and Rapha Guerreiro, we wanted to overload there. And on the other side, crosses from half-field from Joshua Kimmich.
“We encouraged the team to show a bit more personality, to have shorter distances in the combinations so that we don’t get stuck...I’m happy about the performance, because that was a very good second half.” Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s massive 1-0 win over Arsenal FC to advance to the semifinals of the Champions League?
