Man United: Besiktas plotting to re-sign striker flop Weghorst

Besiktas are waiting in the wings to strike a deal for on-loan Man United flop Wout Weghorst, sources have told Football Insider. This site revealed on Monday (15 May) that Man United will not pursue a permanent deal for the 30-year-old striker in the summer window. Therefore Weghorst will return to parent club Burnley – who were promoted back to the Premier League for the 2023-24 season. As quoted by the Manchester Evening News (14 May), Clarets boss Vincent Kompany confirmed he will have a “conversation” with the striker about his Turf Moor future when the 2022-23 campaign concludes. However, well-placed sources have told Football Insider that while Kompany will run the rule over Weghorst during pre-season – it is “unlikely” he will feature in Burnley’s plans going forward. It is believed the newly-promoted Lancashire side will instead move for a new striker in the summer window. Besiktas signed Weghorst on loan for the first half of the 2022-23 campaign, and are interested in swooping for the Netherlands international yet again. He notched nine goals and four assists in 18 appearances for the Turkish giants before his surprise switch to Man United in January. According to Sky Sports (14 January), Man United paid Burnley a fee of £2.5million in order to buy Weghorst out of his loan with Besiktas. He has been somewhat less prolific for the Red Devils – managing just two strikes in 28 appearances across all competitions, neither of which came in the Premier League. Weghorst signed for Burnley in January 2022 with the Clarets staring down the barrel of relegation to the Championship. He managed two goals in 20 appearances and secured a swift exit after relegation was confirmed – citing an ambition to play in the 2022 World Cup. His contract at Turf Moor runs until June 2025.
