Chelsea 3-0 Aston Villa, Women’s Super League: Post-match reaction

Chelsea Women’s nervy start to the match, with Aston Villa trying to throw chaos into the Sophie Ingle-Sjoeke Nüsken midfield pairing, quickly came to an end thanks to a literal helping hand from opposing goalkeeper Anna Leat. She handled the ball outside the area to stop Nüsken from getting the opening goal, and got a straight red card for it.
With a women advantage on the pitch, it felt as if Chelsea’s first goal was only a matter of time. However the Villans put up a good fight, and pushed forward a couple of times in ways that did trouble our backline.
Still, the Blues were the superior side not just in numbers but in overall quality. That was as clear as day in our opener, with Aggie Beever-Jones’ neat volley to finish Niamh Charles’ cross in the area. Now behind in the scoreline, Aston Villa went for the “turtle” strategy to stop Chelsea from simply stomping them. It was yielding results up until Maika Hamano scored her first ever club goal. Chelsea couldn’t afford wasting the opportunity to score a bunch of goals against Aston Villa, given how vital goal difference might be in the title race against Manchester City. In the second half the Blues kept pushing for goals, and they would get a third on a corner kick headed into the back of the net by Kadeisha Buchanan. With perhaps the most difficult match of the season right around the corner, Chelsea didn’t push as hard for goals once they got the third one. Aston Villa tried to make the most out of the Blues playing more conservatively, but the lack of bodies upfront made their forays quite toothless.
Carefree!
First starts for Catarina Macario and Maika Hamano!
Aggie Beever-Jones is a natural.
Everyone but Aston Villa loved Hamano’s first ever club goal.
And a first goal for Kadeisha Buchanan as well!
Many will (rightfully) feel Chelsea could have bagged more goals against this weak(ened) Aston Villa side. But given our momentum, playing more conservatively and still finding a way back into the winning track is a pretty good result for us.
Next up: Barcelona away in the UEFA Women’s Champions League semifinal first leg.
KTBFFH!
