Report: Mats Hummels is Ready for a 1-year Extension With Borussia Dortmund

Rumor upon rumor about Mats Hummels’ future have been swirling around in the German media for the past few months, but now it finally looks like the speculations might be over. As reported bh BILD, the 35-year old defender is now ready to extent his contract with BVB for one year.

BREAKING: Mats Hummels is ready to extend his contract for another year. @BILD #BVB — BVB Newsblog (@bvbnewsblog) April 19, 2024

I think a large majority if not all BVB fans will be happy about this piece of news, although it’s not quite official yet. Mats Hummels has without a shadow of a doubt been BVB’s best defender this season, and on more than one occasion, the Black and Yellow veteran has rolled back the years for some of his best performances to date, namely against Bayern Munich in late March and against AC Milan at the San Siro in back in November. What also makes me certain that this is a good a good deal for everyone involved is, that Hummels himself has been quite vocal abouts his thoughts on retirement. The seasoned defender has always been a very smart, talkative and honest figure in public, and if he says his body can last for another season—maybe without being full-time on the pitch—I 100 % trust his decision.
Having Hummels in the ranks for another year will also be a huge boost off the pitch. It will also make the life of a future squad planner much easier, as The Black and Yellows can skip a new acquisition in central defense. This probably also means that we can forget everything about the Jeff Chabot rumors.
Your Thoughts?
