Match Report: Leicester City 2 - 1 West Ham United

Leicester City defeated West Ham United by a score of 2-1 on the final day of the 2022/23 season but failed to stave off relegation as Everton defeated AFC Bournemouth 1-0. Harvey Barnes scored the opener in the first half to give Leicester an early lead. Wout Faes headed home in the second period for the Foxes, and Pablo Fornals got a late consolation goal for the visitors. Dean Smith had his work cut out for him, selecting a starting XI for a match that was both crucial and potentially meaningless. His squad: Daniel Iversen, Timothy Castagne, Jonny Evans (C), Wout Faes, Luke Thomas, Boubakary Soumare, Youri Tielemans, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, James Maddison, Harvey Barnes, and Kelechi Iheanacho.
The Foxes struck first through a lovely team goal. Barnes received the ball in space and drove towards the box. He found Iheancho, who tapped a return ball into the path of the former West Bromwich Albion loanee. He kept his cool, sending Fabianski the wrong way and burying his shot in the side netting inside the far post. In the second half, Barnes won a free kick on the left wing. Tielemans lofted it into the box, finding the head of Wout Faes. The Belgium man glanced it home from close range, giving the keeper no chance at all.
The Hammers got one back late when Pablo Fornals received the ball behind the City defence. He carried it into the box and found the back of the net with a low drive that Iversen could do nothing about it.
The match ended with the Foxes on top by a score of 2-1, but they still need Bournemouth to get a result at Goodison Park. The Cherries saw a late effort well saved and couldn’t find a way past the Everton defence. The result in Liverpool means that Leicester City will be spending the 2023/24 campaign in the League Championship.
