West Ham sack verdict for David Moyes after what Gary Lineker said

Gary Lineker believes David Moyes defended himself in his post-match press conference after West Ham lost 2-0 away at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Saturday. Goals at the end of each half by Taiwo Awoniyi and Callum Hudson-Odoi sealed all three points for Forest at the City Ground while the Irons continued their winless start to 2024 in the Premier League. Pressure has been rising on Moyes with fans raising ‘Moyes Out’ banners in the away end on 18 February. Lineker admits it’s not all sunshine and rainbows at the London Stadium right now while Danny Murphy understands why the fans would want the Scotsman to be sacked. “Things don’t look great for West Ham, [they’re] yet to win this calendar year in the league and there’s been a bit of criticism of David Moyes. What do you make of that? He defended himself [in his post-match press conference],” said Lineker on BBC One’s Match of the Day [18 February, 01:02:15]. “I understand both sides [of the debate],” Murphy replied. “The criticism from supporters who pay a lot of money, 60,000 fans each week, they want to see their team playing more on the front foot. “They want more energy – I understand that. Moyes also makes fair points in that his style has given West Ham a trophy and stabilised them. “I think we’re getting to the stage in football where supporters want to be entertained. Look at Tottenham with Antonio Conte. “They reached fourth and fifth in the Premier League, but they’re now enjoying their team play again. West Ham fans have lost that enjoyment.” Will West Ham sack David Moyes? Moyes was offered a new contract not too long ago with his existing deal set to expire at the end of the 2023/24 season. If you were to look at the campaign on paper, the ex-Everton boss has West Ham eighth in the Premier League table, in the last-16 of the Europa League and reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup where they lost to league-leaders Liverpool. On top of that, you have a relegation survival upon his return to the club, multiple campaigns in Europe and, of course, the Europa Conference League title last term. That’s all well and good but ultimately, there’s friction behind the scenes with Moyes and technical director Tim Steidten. Is that hampering the club? Some of the signings made don’t match up with the style of play that’s being employed at the London Stadium and the failure – yet again – to sign a new centre-forward is ridiculous. David Moyes has found himself under increasing pressure at West Ham United. Will West Ham sack Moyes? They could – but it’s unlikely to happen with the club in eighth place in the Premier League. David Sullivan will be confident the Scotsman can turn things around and – maybe – go far in Europe again.
