Danilo suffers muscle injury in Roma draw, now a doubt for the Coppa Italia final

Over the last three months, Juventus getting some good news has been pretty hard to come by. That’s mainly because of what has taken place on the field over the last three-plus months, and the subsequent quickly falling out of the Serie A title race and prolonged delay of Champions League qualification.
The one good thing that has happened for Max Allegri’s squad is that they, somehow, got past Lazio and advanced to the Coppa Italia final against Atalanta.
Wth the Coppa final a little over a week away, Allegri saw the latest piece of bad news arrive to begin the work week after they returned home from Rome.
Juventus announced Monday that their captain, Danilo, underwent scans on what they are describing as “a low-grade myotendinous injury of the hamstring” — an injury that will see the Brazilian defender certainly miss out on Sunday’s game with Salernitana and, more importantly, makes him a doubt for the Coppa Italia next Wednesday in Rome. In announcing Danilo’s injury — one that Juve say he reported during Sunday’s draw with Roma — here is no timetable for Danilo’s return, but do report that he has already started the rehabilitation process.

Continassa: si ferma #Danilo per una lesione miotendinea di basso grado del bicipite femorale. Out con la Salernitana ma si prova a recuperarlo per la finale di Coppa Italia. #Juventus — Giovanni Albanese (@GiovaAlbanese) May 6, 2024

So, losing one of your two top defenders is never a good thing. It’s even more of a tough blow when this new injury that he’s suffered puts him under serious doubt for a game in which Juventus can actually win a trophy, and it’s just a total letdown.
The question obviously becomes: How does Allegri cope with it?
Rolling out somebody like Alex Sandro is acceptable when it’s against the worst team in the league in Salernitana, who Juventus will be hosting at the Allianz Stadium this weekend. But feeling confident about how things will go if Sandro is rolled out there against a team capable of absolutely blitzing you in quick fashion like Atalanta? Yeah, I dunno about that one there, Max.
The only other option Allegri has — other than going to a back four, but we know full well that ain’t gonna happen under this manager unless it’s in your EAFC 24 save — is to have Daniele Rugani step in for Danilo if he’s not ready to go against Atalanta next week. Rugani, who has recently been informed he will go on trial for drunk driving, at least gives you reasonable confidence that he will get the job done defensively despite his limited playing time. That is definitely not the case for Sandro, who has a good number of moments on his 2023-24 “highlight” reel where he’s responsible for the opponent scoring.
So while we don’t know when Danilo is going to be healthy again, the hope is that he somehow defies the initial thinking of the Italian press and gets back in time for the Coppa Italia final. You’ve got one week, Dani, so best of luck.
