Report: Contacts between Chiesa’s camp still ‘positive’ as contract talks continue

There was a whole lot of smoke seen on Tuesday on the front pages of all three of Italy’s big sporting newspapers. It was pretty much a choose your own adventure kind of scenario when it came to Federico Chiesa’s future at Juventus, with varying storylines being thrown out there depending on your publication of choice.
“Are things all good with Juventus?” one paper threw out there.
“Juventus and Chiesa both want to sign a one-year deal!” another one wrote.
“Roma want Chiesa and Daniele De Rossi has personally called him!” the third one declared.
Well, for those who want Juventus to keep Chiesa around amidst what is looking more and more like a summer of big changes, there’s still some good news out there.
According to TuttoJuve’s Mirko Di Natale on Wednesday, contacts between Juventus’ management — namely Cristiano Giuntoli — and Chiesa’s representation “are positive” and the two sides are simply waiting to have the chance to meet and hold serious talks. As has been previously reported, Juve have chosen to put off major contract talks with players until after both Champions League qualification is secured and next week’s Coppa Italia final.
So, with just two games to go after the Coppa final next Wednesday, it’s pretty much a situation where, according to Di Natale, Juve and Chiesa’s camp won’t sit down and talk a contract extension until after the 2023-24 season is over. With Chiea’s contract set to expire in 2025, the general line of thinking is that Giuntoli has no plans to let the Italian winger enter the final year of his contract without any sort of resolution. Considering there have been plenty of rumors surrounding Chiea’s future at Juventus being attached to who is the club’s manager next season, one could do the math and think that if a new deal arrives then it’s already been communicated what’s going on with who’s calling the shots for the 2024-25 campaign.
The main rumor right now, if Chiesa were to extend his deal, is adding a year onto his contract to have it run through 2026 and then see what happens in the following months. He currently earns €5 million net, which currently puts him as the seventh-highest earner on the team.
Of course, there’s also the ever-present piece of the puzzle being Chiea’s salary demands, which has been previously reported as he wants to be one of the club’s highest earners. Pair that with Giuntoli’s task of trying to get the overall payroll down again this summer and you’ve got an interesting and added wrinkle to this negotiation process.
At the very least, though, the two sides are still talking and those talks are reportedly positive. At least there’s that because keeping good players around is usually a good idea.
