‘As Good as You’re Going to Get’: Doncaster Rovers Sign Former Newcastle and Hartlepool Right-Back
Doncaster Rovers have confirmed the signing of right-back Jamie Sterry on a two-year deal.
Sterry, 27, left Hartlepool United following their relegation to the National League.
The defender played 102 times for Hartlepool over the course of a two-and-a-half-year stay.
Speaking of Sterry, Hartlepool boss John Askey recently told Hartlepool Mail: “If you’ve got a fully fit Jamie Sterry he’s as good as you’re going to get in this league and arguably he can play higher with the ability he’s got.” Read More: Doncaster Rovers Complete First Signing of Summer With Returning Player
Sterry started out at Newcastle United, last representing The Magpies in an FA Cup third-round replay in January 2019 before leaving in 2020.

Business Continues With Third Signing of Summer
Sterry is the third new signing at the Eco-Power Stadium this summer, continuing to strengthen the backline having added experience in goalkeeper Ian Lawlor and centre-back Richard Wood.
Rovers particularly needed to strengthen at right-back after Kyle Knoyle’s mid-season departure for Stockport County, who face Carlisle United in the League Two play-off final on Sunday, May 28.
Knoyle’s absence in the side was clear and loan signing James Brown failed to make much of an impact down the right-hand side.
Sterry made his Newcastle debut in May 2015 – a 5-1 Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur – where he was a late substitute – before being loaned to Coventry City for the first half of the following campaign. He played 28 games in all competitions for Hartlepool last season, scoring two and assisting two. He will reunite with former Pools teammate Luke Molyneux in Doncaster.

Sterry told the club website: “I’m delighted to get it done, especially after speaking to the gaffer. Knowing a lot about the club, playing here a few times, I’m absolutely over the moon.
“I had a lot of conversations with different clubs but this one felt right with me after speaking with the manager. I know how big the club is and the ambition is for the club to get promoted.”

Rovers manager Grant McCann, who returned to the club two weeks ago, added: “It’s a really good signing for us. I’ve been a fan for many years now – probably rolling back to when he was at Newcastle and when we played their U21s in the EFL Trophy when I was here. “He’s a good character, a really good player, his physical abilities and the way he wants to get forward.”
