Semi-Automated Offside technology set to debut next season

The Premier League is set to improve its use of tech by implementing semi-automated offside technology, mostly to speed up VAR decision-making processes, according to The Guardian.
The new system is expected to be operational by next season fall and the main goal of its introduction is trimming the average VAR review time by approximately 31 seconds. That’s because this new technology will use camera footage alongside tracking software to accurately determine players’ positions during offside scenarios without having to be analyzed lengthy by refs, automatizing the process.
This initiative received unanimous support from Premier League clubs at a shareholders’ meeting held last week. Although the technology won’t be available at the start of the season, there is no doubt moving away from the manual process of drawing lines on camera images is something that would eventually come to the Premier League, so whenever that is, that’s good news.
Howard Webb, the head of the referees’ body PGMOL, publicly supported the adoption of this technology, which was successfully used during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The system not only speeds up the review process but also allows for the auto-generation of quality live graphics for display within stadiums that don’t come out as randomly crafted by those sitting in VAR booths.
The Premier League has highlighted that the semi-automated system will ensure quicker and more consistent placement of virtual offside lines through optical player tracking.
Now, it’s up to the referees to adapt to it quickly and for the system to, well, be actually introduced at some point next fall.
