Probable Formations: Udinese vs Roma

With Roma riding high after matching 1-0 wins in the Derby della Capitale over Lazio and Europa League quarterfinal first leg at the San Siro over Milan, Daniele De Rossi will be tempted not to tinker too much with his squad in Friuli on Sunday. However, with the return leg against Milan at the Olimpico looming on Thursday, it will behoove De Rossi to use some rotation to keep some key men fresh with European progression on the line.
That being said, no matter who De Rossi runs out there, he will continue to point out Roma's slip-up against Lecce two weeks ago as something they cannot let happen. He emphasized that in his pre-match quotes.
“Our victory in Milan and our derby win are fresh in mind but we must keep Lecce in mind too. Our objective must be not to produce a repeat of that showing, especially at the start.”
Anything less than 100% against relegation-battling Udinese won’t be enough, considering the Zebrette pushed Inter to the brink recently. De Rossi was asked if some of his key men—Dybala, Pellegrini, and Spinazzola—were indeed 100% fit after Thursday.
“First of all, I plan to ask them how they’re feeling to avoid them picking up any niggles, which have meant we’ve lost them in the past. We’ve had two very intense games, both from a physical point of view and the mental energy we’ve expended. A few of them are carrying knocks that we have to bear in mind but it never comes down to one player; it’s the team’s attitude as a whole.”
With De Rossi playing a bit coy on the status of those three, we suspect that they, along with Chris Smalling, Stephan El Shaarawy, and Zeki Çelik, are the most likely to be rotated out against Udinese.
Starting along the back, we expect three-fourths of the defense to turnover, with only match-winner Gianluca Mancini keeping his place. Rick Karsdorp and Angeliño will replace Çelik and Spinazzola at full-back. Meanwhile, Evan Ndicka, who has been suspended for the last two matches, will regain his starting place alongside Mancini.
In the midfield, De Rossi will likely want to protect his captain a bit, knowing that he’ll be without Bryan Cristante through suspension for the return leg against Milan. He’ll be replaced by either Edoardo Bove or Houssem Aouar. We’ll lean toward Bove, as he will likely need to find some rhythm ahead of Milan.
In the attack, De Rossi was asked about the possibility of Tammy Abraham starting, but that seems unlikely.
“We’ll see. He’s getting better and better and is training regularly. Physically, in terms of his strength, energy and his sprint speed he’s looking great. In terms of managing the workload, both in training and matches, obviously after ten months he’s champing at the bit so we have to guide him to build up his fitness so that we can get him back to 100%.”
Instead, we expect Romelu Lukaku to keep his place with one or both of Tommaso Baldazni and Nicola Zalewski getting a chance on the wings.
ROMA (4-3-3): Svilar; Karsdorp, Mancini, Ndicka, Angeliño; Bove, Paredes, Cristante; Baldanzi, Lukaku, El Shaarawy. All. De Rossi
