Probable Formations: AS Roma vs AC Milan

“It’s an interesting question and one which I think reveals the essence of this job. You’re always looking for something that might work but at the same time you’re always afraid of trying to do too much. That’s what [journalist Daniele] Lo Monaco always writes about in his articles.
“I think there are certain qualities that your opponents have which you should always be respectful of. You have to figure out to what extent something that worked in the first game can be changed by your opposite number and how willing they are to change, because it’s not as if we won 7-0 and they never got out of their area.
“We played really well and deserved to score a few more but Milan played well too. They weren’t on the back foot the whole time. We did well and managed to put into practice the plan we’d prepared, but it was a balanced encounter in which we did better.
“We don’t think they’ll radically alter their set-up but they might change a few players or something in their approach. When you prepare for a match you must always be careful not to alter your team too much if you don’t need to.
“[Nils] Liedholm always used to say. ‘I set them up perfectly, then they moved and everything changed.’ It’s true: we can’t create hundreds of different situations thinking about how Stefano Pioli will play, because he might not play that way and it would just create confusion. We’re considering making a few changes but we’re not going to make any drastic changes.”
That was the response that Daniele De Rossi had during his prematch presser to a journalist asking about the tactical tweak he made with Stephan El Shaarawy playing the right in the first leg and if any other changes would be made for this one. And as De Rossi said, this tie is far from over and he won’t be making drastic changes. That means we won’t expect any formation change and very few personnel changes from the first leg.
There will be one forced change for this one, though, with Bryan Cristante missing out through yellow card accumulation. It’ll be a big loss in Roma’s midfield, but it does present a big opportunity for youngster Edoardo Bove, who has seen his playing time dip under De Rossi.
“Edoardo Bove will play instead of Cristante and I have complete confidence in him. Bryan’s absence changes nothing to the way we play and the choices I’ll make. He’s a big loss, a very important player for us, but another player will play who we all have great faith in. He’ll have a great game and leave the pitch with his shirt drenched because he’s an excellent player and he deserves it.”
And other than Bove for Cristante, we’re not expecting any changes from last Thursday’s XI. That means a defense of Zeki Çelik, Gianluca Mancini, Chris Smalling, and Leonardo Spinazzola in front of Mile Svilar. Bove will complete the midfield trio with Lorenzo Pellegrini and Leandro Paredes. Lastly, the attack will be comprised of Stephan El Shaarawy, Romelu Lukaku, and Paulo Dybala.
ROMA (4-3-3): Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Smalling, Spinazzola; Bove, Paredes, Pellegrini; Dybala, Lukaku, El Shaarawy
