Cityzen Forever: David Silva Honoured by Real Sociedad on Retirement
Manchester City legend David Silva was given a guard of honour ahead of Real Sociedad's match against Real Madrid in the Spanish top flight on Friday night. Sociedad players were joined by Real Madrid players in giving the former midfield maestro an official send off from the game as a professional player.
Silva left Manchester City in 2020 after a successful decade with the club where he made 309 appearances and won several trophies including four Premier League titles.
He returned to La Liga with Real Sociedad and won the Copa del Rey with the club in 2020. This was his second Copa trophy after his first with Valencia back in 2008. Becoming one of the best players in the team, he spent three years with the club before a long-term injury forced him to retire from the game last summer.
However, during his three-year stint in Donostia, he made 93 appearances for Sociedad and won the award for the club's best player last season at the ripe age of 38.
It's understandable then that the club found him worthy of being given a public farewell after his recovery in appreciation for his three-year service.
“The truth is that I was right to come, because I am very happy in San Sebastián, as well as the three years I was with the team,” Silva reflected in an earlier interview about his time at the club.
Having achieved so much in his career both for club and country, including winning the World Cup and European championship with Spain, Silva really deserves a guard of honour on his retirement as a show of appreciation.
