Report: Southampton have transfer bid turned down for PSV’s Cody Gakpo
Southampton have reportedly had a transfer bid rejected for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo.
The Netherlands international has been linked to a string of Premier League clubs, including Manchester United earlier in the transfer window, Everton, and Leeds United.
But according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Southampton have “made the most concrete approach” for Gakpo so far this summer. However, that wasn’t enough for the Eredivisie club to accept.
The report says that Gakpo has been identified as a key target for Southampton and negotiations have been led by Rasmus Ankersen, co-founder of Saints’ ownership group Sport Republic.
Aged 23, Gakpo scored 12 goals and assisted 13 in PSV’s last Eredivisie campaign and has already started this season strongly with three goals and three assists to his name already.
PSV’s failure to qualify for UEFA Champions League football is said to have increased Saints’ chances of signing the forward, who has also hinted that his future is uncertain in Holland.
“I can’t say anything about it at the moment,” Gakpo said about where he will play out the rest of the 2022-23 season. “As I said before, the whole picture has to be right. It is a puzzle and in the coming days I will see which puzzle fits best.”
Gakpo came through PSV’s youth system and has scored 46 times in 143 games for the Eindhoven club.
Saints are in the market for at least one more forward and signing Gakpo would certainly bolster Ralph Hasenhuttl’s attacking options.
