Tottenham worried about Liverpool swoop for Postecoglou

Big Liverpool, Tottenham, Everton, West Ham, Newcastle United, Leeds United, Rangers and Celtic news. Welcome to the latest edition of my twice-weekly column – bringing you exclusive transfer and contract news, as well as news from the Premier League, EFL, Scottish Premiership and beyond. Follow Football Insider on Twitter to see the latest news as it breaks! Ange Postecoglou to Liverpool? Postecoglou has been strongly linked with Liverpool despite their active interest in Bayer Leverkusen boss and former Red Xabi Alonso. I’m told it would be difficult for the Merseysiders to lure him away from Tottenham if they firm up that interest. Spurs have no desire to lose him to Liverpool or elsewhere with Champions League qualification a big possibility this season. Postecoglou is happy at the club and I expect them to back him heavily as I’ve been told they will be busy in the summer window. The Lilywhites are trying to build a youthful, exciting side and the Australian has already won over an army of supporters in north London. I’m told Postecoglou has no release clause in his contract at Spurs and Daniel Levy is a notoriously hard negotiator. Tottenham are comfortable with the current situation as he has three years left to run on his contract and would not entertain any compensation offers from Liverpool or other sides. However, there is always concern when a club as big and glamorous as Liverpool are involved. I’m told he will get a multi-million payout which was decided before the start of the 2023-24 campaign. Sources also say talks will likely take place over a potential new contract if Leeds are promoted – despite him having more than three years left to run on his current deal. The Yorkshire giants’ playing staff are also in line for big bonuses if promotion is achieved. I’m told to expect a flurry of new contracts to be agreed upon a return to the Premier League – with Illan Meslier, Crysencio Summerville, Patrick Bamford and Dan James among those out of contract in 2026. READ MORE EXCLUSIVE LEEDS UNITED NEWS AND PUNDIT VIEWS West Ham assemble new manager target list West Ham are putting together contingency plans in case they part company with Moyes and have drawn up a shortlist with a lot of names. The Scot is yet to sign a new deal at the London Stadium despite having under five months left on his current contract. I’m told the Irons would consider the potential to lure a top manager if one becomes available – after being impressed by Aston Villa’s capture of Unai Emery in 2022. However, the main priority is to end this slump in form and sit down with Moyes about a new deal. Sources say if Moyes is happy to stay on, West Ham will give him a new deal – and I expect him to pledge his future at the London Stadium. But if an agreement can’t be found and a top manager becomes available, I’m told the board will have no hesitation in making the right decision. READ MORE EXCLUSIVE WEST HAM NEWS AND PUNDIT VIEWS Four Rangers big names set to leave John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack, Kemar Roofe and Jon McLaughlin are all out of contract at Ibrox in May. I’m told Lundstram is the priority for the board, with talks ongoing about a new deal in Glasgow. Meanwhile, Barisic is looking to move on and take advantage of his free-agent status by securing a bigger deal elsewhere. Roofe’s constant injury problems mean he is not likely to be offered a new contract at Rangers. McLaughlin is also set to be let go with Jack Butland’s arrival last summer (2023) meaning he has fallen down the pecking order at Ibrox. Rangers are keen to trim the wage bill and free up space in their squad in the upcoming summer window. READ MORE EXCLUSIVE RANGERS NEWS AND PUNDIT VIEWS Tottenham confident about affording Branthwaite Tottenham have been widely linked with a potential move for Everton star Branthwaite in the summer window. I’m told money will not be an issue for Spurs in the transfer market – they are confident about raising the cash for big deals in the off-season. However, the problem will be fitting Branthwaite into the squad with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven performing so well under Postecoglou. Radu Dragusin also arrived in January from Genoa but is yet to make an impact in north London. I’m told Tottenham are not likely to spend big money on a backup defender – meaning their reported interest in Branthwaite is unlikely to materialise as things stand. Spurs technical director has admitted they are looking to sign the best young talent – and raising the funds for other deals will be no issue.
