Real Betis seemingly interested in Lo Celso return

Giovani Lo Celso hasn’t had the happiest season at Tottenham Hotspur. After it initially seemed like the Argentine may see a new lease of life at Spurs within Ange Postecoglou’s attacking system, he instead has seen his playing time dwindle, with injuries (of course) hampering his progress and Postecoglou preferring other options in central midfield. The real nail in the coffin has been Dejan Kulusevski’s adaptation to central roles, with big Ange often choosing to shift the Swede centrally when chasing matches as opposed to utilizing Lo Celso.
As a result, there have been multiple reports that have begun to leak out in recent weeks, declaring Lo Celso unhappy with the current situation at Tottenham and wanting to explore his options on the transfer market in the summer. Up until this point, however, there was nothing concrete within any of these reports, with dubious sourcing and tabloid outlets seemingly just putting two and two together as to Lo Celso’s playing time and contract status.
Until now.
Estadio Deportivo, a local Seville outlet, actually has some quotes for us! Real Betis sporting director Manu Fajardo was apparently asked about the potential signing of Lo Celso and what it may mean for other players in the Betis squad (namely attacking midfielder Nabil Fekir), and Fajardo had this to say:
“Giovani is a player who has already shown his worth here, who continues to do so when he goes with the Argentina national team and who is also complementary to Nabil Fekir.”
Now, ED aren’t exactly two letters that inspire confidence, and neither is Estadio Deportivo as an outlet... except when they’re reporting on Sevilla and Real Betis, two clubs local to them, and the fact that there’s actual quotes here is rather unusual when it comes to a club pursuing a player. Pursuit is probably too strong a word when referring to the quotes above, but it definitely seems like Betis are at least interested in Lo Celso!
Giovani Lo Celso spent time at Real Betis before signing for Spurs. It was a convoluted loan-to-buy deal with PSG that saw the attacking midfielder land at the Andalusian club, where he saw pretty extensive success that clearly caught the Tottenham transfer hierarchy’s eye. Unfortunately for Gio, he hasn’t been able to replicate that same success in the Premier League - and a return to his former club might be a good option. He has seemed comfortable playing in Spain in the past (with loans to Villareal also working out pretty well) and it’s possible that the pace of La Liga might just be a better fit with Gio’s physical struggles.
Whatever Gio decides to do next, it seems clear that Betis are interested, and less and less likely that Gio will be a Tottenham Hotspur player next season.
