AC Milan Seeking Return Of Villarreal Loanee Gabbia

Reports indicate that Milian and Villarreal are negotiating the return of Gabbia to Italy. The Italian CB who is on loan at Villarreal has struggled to start under Marcelino.
Milian have recently been hit by injuries themselves. They are currently seeking an emergency CB option as they are without Pierre Kalulu, Simon Kjaer, Mattia Caldara, Malick Thiaw.
Gabbia has had a hit and miss season with a few nervy performances at the back. In truth Villarreal haven’t looked great at the back regardless. Gabbia when he has played has not looked altogether convincing at the back often missing key challenges at head height.
Fans were surprised in summer that Villarreal only signed a CB on loan after Pau Torres exit. This left only Albiol as the certified safe hands at the back. Mandi and Cuenca have also had shaky performances although the latter has looked better under Marcelino recently.
From both club’s perspectives it does make sense that the deal goes ahead. Villarreal have reportedly assured Marcelino they will purchase a new CB. By letting the Italian return, it will free up space in squad to find a new CB. There have been rumours of David Garcia at Osasuna and if other players leave in January this might be a worthy signing.
In truth Villarreal need a new CB more than any position especially with Albiol contract being up end of the year. From Milian’s perspective they gain an emergency CB who knows and by all accounts loves the club. Gabbia does seem to be enjoying his time at Villarreal and playing more however may be keen on a return to prove his worth for Milian. He has only played 45 minutes under Marcelino but his loan will end in the summer.
